The Table and Battle Cards

On hindsight I definitely picked the wrong deployment – with 2 objectives within the spaceport the Imps were already having to attack a fortified position.  I was confident however I could overcome this with the Speeder Bikes, inflitrators and prodigious amounts of rappelling gear!

Turn 1

With the vast distance between us, no-one wanted to commit valuable orders just yet.

With most of the movement concealed by the Spaceport wall, action was limited to the over-extended Swoop gang being ambushed by 2 squads of Speeder Bikes and a Stormtrooper squad.  First blood to the Imps.

My special forces managed to shave a wound off Maul, but by the end of the turn the Shadow Collective had firmly occupied the Star Port.

Turn 2

I wanted to get a few orders out as priority would be important, so Jimmy got the drop, sending a squad of Commandoes over the wall to kill one of my Speeder Bikes.  I instantly countered with them, moving to wound Maul again before Jimmy had chance to kill the other.

Maul was, of course, happy to oblige…

He wasn’t too happy with the response from the speeders coming in from the right flank though, being reduced to 1 wound.

Trading continued.  This was getting bloody….

…but the third Speeder squad was able to deliver the killing blow.

The Pikes finished off the second speeder squad with righteous indignation.

Inferno Squad were set upon by the second commando squad, with the first hitting my Special forces…  As Maul had force choked Del Meeko, I had no choice but to remove him with 2 wounds done.

The response from the Imperial forces was swift and brutal.  Combined fire cut into the first Commando Squad, with Iden herself finishing off the squad.

With all the Shadow Collective activate, my final act was to hop Inferno Squad over the wall to contest the centre objective.  Score 1-1.

End of turn pics:

Turn 3

I needed the first turn with Inferno Squad to get them, out of dodge, so Ambush went down and I was able to win the rolloff.  I had been careful to get Iden into range 1 of Gar and the Commandoes with her Comms Jammer to cause problems with Jimmy’s command tokens.  I hadn’t counted on the ploy card.

Inferno Squad retreated back over the wall – recovering to reload the grapples, firing ineffectively at the Enforcers then heading over the wall to (relative) safety.

The remaining Commandoes, able to activate via the ploy card, Ruthlessly pummelled Iden, taking down her shield and inflicting 4 wounds, retreating to the objective as they did so.

Through combined fire my last Speeder squad fell.  Turn over.

Turn 3

An unplanned but happy outcome from killing Maul was that Jimmy’s command card hand had disappeared.  I threw down my face Iden card.  Hopefully this would help shift the 4 Mandoes and Gar Saxon off the objective this turn.  I at least needed to clear some of the Mandoes to get Inferno Squad back on the objective…

One of the 2 Stormtrooper units that had been sprinting up the table moved into the objective, placing a claim and cutting into the Enforcers before they could return fire.

The return fire was of course brutal, with the Pikes and Mandoes combining to take the squad off the objective.

My consolation was to finish off the Enforcers.  But with the Mandoes firmly holding the Mid objective, and the 2 others held 1 for 1, the score was now 3-2 to the Shadow Collective.

Turn 4 and 5

The trick now was to throw everything at the mid objective to at least contest it, and get the Pikes off the far objective.

Between Gideon, Iden and a Stormtrooper Squad I was able to kill the Pikes and move in.  Losing Inferno Squad, the Spec Forces were positioned to storm the wall and contest in Turn 5.

This was it.  Iden managed to trim the Mando Squad down to 1 model, but Gar got himself into overwatch.

My Spec Forces squad would need to traverse the wall, survive overwatch, kill the last Mando and contest the objective to claim a win..

…But it wasn’t to be.  Gar ruthlessly cut down the squad as it dropped off the wall.

Win to the Shadow Collective

Conclusion

Such a great game.  I really dropped the ball with the setup, and Jimmy overcommitted his commandoes early on but we were both able to recover.  The Mando armour eventually shined through, and prodigious use of Overwatch gabe excellent results in the close quarters of the Spaceport.  As is often in our Legion games, it was decided on the last dice roll 😀
