Mission and Setup

James went for the hasty attack whilst I went defence, so we ended up with Fighting Withdrawal with James as the attacker.

Sketch

Turn 1 – Brits and US

James started his advance, mostly dashing transports towards my objectives and dropping a HUGE smoke line on my left flank to prevent me hitting the transports there.  His only shooting potted a single Mortar team.  I countered with my air assets and VADS using smoke cover.  Annoyingly he was still able to take down a Cobra despite needing 7s to hit, and my A10s failed to destroy the transports.  I was forced to use my VADS to blow up the transports rather than getting to fire on the infantry…

On my left, I was able to take down a couple of transports thus slowing his advance.

Turn 2 – Brits

On my left, James’ dismounted Infantry made REALLY short work of my VADS.

2017-07-23 Team Yankee Lee vs James (17)

On my right, TOW Helos and track mounter ATGMs took out a unit of ITVs and finished off my Mortars, whilst his unpinned infantry advanced.

2017-07-23 Team Yankee Lee vs James (18)2017-07-23 Team Yankee Lee vs James (20)2017-07-23 Team Yankee Lee vs James (21)

It was fair to say at this point the Brit advance was going to plan.

2017-07-23 Team Yankee Lee vs James (16)

Turn 2 – US

I threw what I could into breaking the Infantry advance.  The A10s didn’t present themselves for use.

On my left, I could only succeed in pinning the Infantry at the cost of 1 Cobra.

2017-07-23 Team Yankee Lee vs James (23)2017-07-23 Team Yankee Lee vs James (24)

On my right, we were moderately more successful, being able to take out 4 teams of infantry mainly with my M113s despite them being in bulletproof cover (yay .50 cals!)

2017-07-23 Team Yankee Lee vs James (25)

Turn 3 – Brits

James’ hatred of M113s and .50 Cals shone through, with him schything through 2 units of them.  His push on my right faltered a little as his troops were enjoying the Bulletproof cover for a little while longer.  In the centre table woods, Scimitars began picking apart my Mortars and M113s hidden in there.

Turn 3 – US

I withdrew my ITV unit from the woods.  My turn 3 must have been really mediocre, as I took no photographic evidence of it whatsoever (or the records have been redacted – who knows! ūüôā )  I do know I lost another Cobra and the last one run off though, and that the Brits on my left flank were pinned…

Turn 4 – Brits

On my left the Brits were unable to unpin and shifted sideways to gain cover.

2017-07-23 Team Yankee Lee vs James (33)

2017-07-23 Team Yankee Lee vs James (34)

On my right, James sprung another Infantry platoon from the transports that had slowly picked their way over the hill and occupied the house directly adjacent to the objective.  Fire poured in and took out the 2nd ITV squad and pinned Black Platoon.

2017-07-23 Team Yankee Lee vs James (37)2017-07-23 Team Yankee Lee vs James (35)2017-07-23 Team Yankee Lee vs James (36)

Turn 4 – US

I withdrew my A10s as their usefulness against infantry was proving to be limited.  On my left I poured fire into the Infantry there, whittling their numbers.

On my right my fire was virtually ineffectual due to Bulletproof cover etc.

2017-07-23 Team Yankee Lee vs James (39)

Turn 5 – Brits and US

On my left, James landed his Air Company Helos to prepare to support the assault.  He pushed forward with the remnants of his rallied platoon and attempted to assault my foxholes.  They were forced back and suffered casualties on the way, thus forcing a morale test which they promptly failed.

2017-07-23 Team Yankee Lee vs James (41)

On my right things were going better for the Brits, killing several Black Platoon teams and forcing them off the objective with assaults.  In my turn, I was unable to take down any of the advancing forces.

2017-07-23 Team Yankee Lee vs James (42)2017-07-23 Team Yankee Lee vs James (43)

Turn 6 – Brits and US

The final move for James was storming a Scimitar through the woods into my platoon on the centre objective, forcing them off it.

2017-07-23 Team Yankee Lee vs James (45)

This gave James 2 objectives secured, and with me only able to remove 1 and unable to advance on the other it was game over.

2017-07-23 Team Yankee Lee vs James (46)2017-07-23 Team Yankee Lee vs James (47)2017-07-23 Team Yankee Lee vs James (48)

Win to the Brits!

Thoughts

This wasn’t a nice list to take on; Brit infantry is an absolute nightmare to fight in attack or defence, and there weren’t really any ‘juicy targets’ to send the A10s after.  My Mech Infantry actually stood up better than I thought they would, and it was a tense game throughout.

Cheers James!

Team Yankee – US vs Brits round 2

Colin was spoiling for another pop at my 80pt US list, and I needed the practice, so we rolled some dice once again.

Total 79pts

The only changes from the last game were that I dropped a dragon team to take bomblets, and Colin dropped a Milan Unit to take more Scimitars.

We ended up with the Hasty Attack mission, with me as attacker.

Sketch

Turn 1 – US

I decided to launch my attack on the objective in the woods on my right.  As Colin had placed his AA in Ambush, my Helos headed into Loiter.  My A10s failed to turn up, so I pushed forward with a ground based assault with my reinforced 3rd Mech Inf unit supporting my 2nd.

2017-07-22 Team Yankee Lee vs Colin (9)

My other Mech Inf moved to protect my objective (I dropped a rollock here and should haver deployed them on it in Foxholes).

Turn 1 – Brits

Colin moved his Scimitars into position and opened up on my advancing Mech Inf, destroying an M113 from each unit and pinning them.

2017-07-22 Team Yankee Lee vs Colin (13)2017-07-22 Team Yankee Lee vs Colin (14)

Turn 2 – US

1 of my 2 pinned Mech Inf units unpinned.  The Dragon teams successfully blitzed from their transports and destroyed a Scimitar and pinned another, whilst the Rfile teams advanced towards the objective and laid down fire into the entrenched Brit troops with no effect.  The pinned unit fell back to the hill.

2017-07-22 Team Yankee Lee vs Colin (18)

Turn 2 – Brits

Seeing that the ojective was under threat, Colin dashed his APCs into tactical range.  His infantry gunned down 2 Mech Inf Teams in the woods.

2017-07-22 Team Yankee Lee vs Colin (19)

Turn 3 – US

Once again my A10s were unable to assist, so I set to putting more pressure on the objective with the tools I had.

Firstly, I was able to blitz on an ITV unit with a line of sight on one of his AA batteries.

One shot, one kill…

Smoke was dropped to cover my Cobras and third platoon’s advance….

…I lost another Cobra.  The last one was unable to inflict any damage, the only positive being that the last one didn’t flee!

Turn 3 – Brits and onwards

Col was able to squeeze a few shots past my Smoke wall and knock out some M113s, pinning my platoon.

2017-07-22 Team Yankee Lee vs Colin (29)

On my turn, I was unable to unpin either pinned platoon and may attack completely stalled, despite taking out a couple more teams of Infantry.

Once Colin’s Air reserves arrived, it was all over….

2017-07-22 Team Yankee Lee vs Colin (32)2017-07-22 Team Yankee Lee vs Colin (33)

Results and thoughts

Win for the Brits!

Rolling a record 5 1s in a row for A10 usage, and being unable to unpin my Infantry completely stalled my attack.  My HQ should have been up with the first infantry push where he would have had an impact.

Colin played a strong game despite being unable to make any reinforce rolls until he was guaranteed them (turn 5).

Good game!

With the UK GT up and coming I’ve been trying to figure out a way to take on NATO MBTs.  Whilst the performance of the Abrams almost always does my proud against WARSAW, they usually get piledrived by Chieftains and I’ve yet to face Leopard 2s – suffice to say I expect to lose that gunfight.  So time for something different…

Mission and Setup

We both went defence choice so rolled up Encounter.  I got pick of the table side and went for the one with a reasonable amount of cover.  I chose 2 platoons of Mech Inf, my A10s, my Cobras and M109s to start on the board.  Colin chose his Rapiers, 2 platoons of Mech Inf and his Scimitars.

A marked up Pic showing units in yellow and the objectives in red…

Inked2017-07-19 Team Yankee Lee vs Col (2)_LI

Turn 1 – US

We rolled off and I secured the first turn… not my ideal plan as it meant I couldn’t fire my artillery (planning a smoke bombardment to cover my Cobras attacking the AA).  However, I did secure the use of the A10s for the turn so I had to go for it…

2017-07-19 Team Yankee Lee vs Col (8)

With Colin not securing the objective with any Infantry, I rushed the location with all my Air units and a platoon of Mech Inf.

I fired with the Cobras first, with Colin electing to fire 2 Rapiers only.  Needing 6s, he fluffed all 6 shots.

With 12 shots on the unit, I hit well but Col also saved well; I only bailed one so would have to use the A10s to clean up.

Col fired his last unbailed Rapier, hitting twice.  I failed one save but he was unable to make his FP.  The A10s then cleaned up, leaving 3 Rapiers dead and 1 bailed.  They promptly failed their morale test and the last Rapier was spiked.

2017-07-19 Team Yankee Lee vs Col (7)

On the other side of the board, I measured my other Mech platoon into buildings (the barn and smaller houses) to give my Dragons good shots and sat back and waited…

2017-07-19 Team Yankee Lee vs Col (9)

Turn 1 – Brits

2017-07-19 Team Yankee Lee vs Col (11)

Col’s Mech Inf from centre board jumped in their FVs and shot over to the objective to support their HQ, leaving the Milans in the Building.  The Scimitars moved to engage my loaded up M113 platoon, but having failed a Blitz move were unable to land any accurate shots.  This was compounded by the Milans missing my helicopters (we forget they would have been additional -1, so 6s, but he missed needing 5s anyways).

Turn 2 – US

With some luck I was able to secure the A10s yet again, so placed them to engage both the Mech Inf and Scimitars with their Gatling Guns.  The cobras sat tight and my Mech Inf dismounted into the woods.

I opened up on the FVs with my Cobra’s guns.  Whilst I landed quite a few hits, Col was able to save a few / only suffer bails.  I opened up with the A10s, splitting fire between the Scimitars and FVs.  Once the dust had settled, all FVs were dead and the Scimitars were either dead or bailed.

I dropped some shots into the infantry from my Mech Inf, but was unable so secure any additional kills beyond those that died in their transports.  My Dragons sniped a Scimitar, and they failed their Morale test and spiked their vehicles and ran.

Turn 2 – Brits

With not much else taking place, Col unpinned his Mech Inf and opened fire on mine.  Securing 5 hits, I rolled my saves…

2017-07-19 Team Yankee Lee vs Col (16)

Yup, 4 failed saves out of 5…. I stared in disbelief for about 30 seconds then picked up my jaw along with my 4 rifle teams ūüôā

Turn 3 – US

Col breathed a sigh of relief when my A10s failed to show, but then I rolled reinforcements and moved my 3rd Infantry Platoon up to reinforce my attack.

I managed to kill 2 more Mech Inf rifle teams with my Cobras and M113s, then foolishly tried to assault them with my M113s.  Seconds later, I was 2 M113s down and the other 2 were retreating with their tails between their legs… Gustav teams FTW I guess!

2017-07-19 Team Yankee Lee vs Col (17)

Turn 3 – Brits

Colin was unable to make any headway defending his right objective, and set up on the left objective.

Turn 4 – US

I spent my turn cleaning off the objective, and Col failed his reinforcement roll.  Victory to the US.

2017-07-19 Team Yankee Lee vs Col (21)

Conclusion

The main reason for the battle was to test A10s and Cobras on the board together in place of Abrams, and it worked.  Other than that, was a fun(ish) and quick game.  The mission we rolled meant that Col had very little on the table and he mis-deployed his infantry somewhat; I was able to capitalise on that.

Apocalypse – 9,000pts per side

So once again a big Apoc game to while away the day… 3 vs 2 – The Good Guys (Eldar, Ultramarines including Guilleman himself, and Deathwatch) facing off against Chaos and Necrons.

Highlights:

  • Necron Heroes tying up Titans in close combat
  • Deathwatch marines throwing out all their cheesy rules, many cries of ‘they do WHAT!??!’
  • Revenant laying waste to the Necron warlord and his entire retinue with 4 guided Pulsar shots on the last turn ūüôā

Mission and Setup

I thought I would try defence for a change; Lee decided the same so we ended up with a meeting engagement.¬† Rolling on the chart, we ended up with Free-For-All.¬† Carnage was assured…

As the Attacker I chose to roll on the night chart and we got a Dawn start.¬† All good…

2017-04-14 Team Yankee Lee vs Lee (1)

I set up strong to roll for the objective on my left… Big Lee mirrored¬†and set up to hit hard on the objective on his left, but with a strong BMP2 overwatch force in mid table.

Big Lee rolled the first turn.¬† He immediately moved to dig in both his infantry formations, and succeeded on both 5+ rolls…

With no shots of consequence fired, it was on to my turn…

Turn 1 – NATO

On my left I advanced my 2 platoons of Abrams; on the right I manoeuvred M113s for some shots on BMP2s.

Firing killed a stand of infantry on my left whilst the M113s and Dragons killed a BMP and bailed 3 or 4 more…

I realise in horror that I’ve forgotten to fire smoke and my Abrams are now exposed to 8 x AT21 shots from the centre board…¬† Regardless, we fire on the infantry again, securing minimal kills but pinning the unit again.

Turn 3 – WARPAC

Lee manoeuvres his T72s on the left to assault positions and gleefully fires his mid-table BMPs on my Abrams.

I get off relatively lightly as he’s needing 6s to hit; 1 Abrams bailed, another destroyed, both from separate platoons (no picture!)

On my right though, things turn nasty really quickly….

…and getting right on top of the objective!

Turn 3 – NATO

Dawn broke and my night time advantage was gone.¬† I was on the verge of losing an objective and had very little in place to counter the T72 advance there.¬† Time for Black Platoon to save the day….

2017-04-14 Team Yankee Lee vs Lee (30)
My Abrams and Red Platoon set up for assault….
2017-04-14 Team Yankee Lee vs Lee (31)
In possibly the most important roll of the game, Black Platoon succeed in their Blitz roll and move 4 stands of Dragons into the flanks of the 2 marauding T72s.
2017-04-14 Team Yankee Lee vs Lee (32)
Firing results in a Shilka killed and 1 bailed, but no infantry kills.¬† Once again I have forgotten to drop smoke, and this time it could REALLY hurt….

Black Platoon save the objective on my right.  They successfully kill 1 T72 and bail the other, allowing White Platoon to move in and spike the stranded T72.  My M113s do what they can to roadblock the advance of the rest of the T72 pack.
2017-04-14 Team Yankee Lee vs Lee (34)
The Abram’s assault goes pretty well, with several bases destroyed and follow up moves allowing some cover from the BMP2s.¬† I also kill 3 BMPs with Dragon fire from the 3 storey building.

Victory : NATO!

Conclusions

The game essentially turned into a race when I decided not to redirect one of my Abrams platoons onto defence in turn 2.¬† Although it worked out, it very nearly didn’t…

When the 2 T72s broke through onto my objective, Lee dropped one mistake that probably cost him the win.¬† He didn’t spin his T72s to face Black Platoon.¬† The mistake was compounded when I succeeded in my Blitz move, which sealed the fate of the 2 T72s.¬† Had they¬†been front facing, the likelihood was that I would not have been to remove them and they would have run rampant through my infantry there.

I was also lucky with Lee’s BMP rolling against my Abrams, although the night played a factor too.

Overall it was a great game.  Looking forward to the next one.

1 apiece Big Lee!

Another Big Table TY Game! Lee and James vs Big Paul, 150pts per side

Following on from our first big table game, we were keen to have another blast.  We have planned 2 vs 2 85pts each, but we lost one of the Soviet players to work issues.  So it was the Brits and US vs the Soviet Horde.

James plumped for a Tank heavy force (for the record, he detests Chieftains but wanted to give them another chance as he’s tired of being told they are good).¬† In support he had a platoon of Infantry, AA and a platoon of Swingfires.

I went for 4 platoons of Mech Infantry supported by 4 Abrams, VADS, 6 Mortars and my FIST OP.

Big Paul… had ALL THE THINGS!

We went attack using the selection system and we ended up with Bridgehead.

Set up undertaken…

Me and James and more or less taken a table half each; I would push for the left objective while James threatened the right.

Turn 1 – NATO

On the left my first job was to eliminate the 2 Recon units sat very close to my setup line, whilst on the right a single mounted¬†Mech Inf Platoon pushed up behind the Refinery to support James’s Infantry.¬† My Abrams moved up to occupy a Stable yard.¬† Between the Abrams and my Mech Inf Dragon teams, we were able to destroy both recon units.

2017-04-06 Team Yankee Lee & James vs Big Paul (15)2017-04-06 Team Yankee Lee & James vs Big Paul (16)

On the right, James pushed up with his Infantry whilst spectacularly failing his 3+ blitz checks with his Chieftains.  Due to gone to ground units and his failed blitz checks, little damage was inflicted on the Soviets.

Turn 1 – WARPAC

With a smile on his face that the Cheshire Cat would be jealous of, Paul sprung a 7 T72 ambush from the level crossing in the centre of the board and gunned straight onto my Abrams for some hopefully easy kills.  His HINDS, coming out of a successful turn 1 reinforcements roll, were also able to deploy beyond the range of all AA systems thanks to the larger board and worked down the left flank to soften up my advance.

2017-04-06 Team Yankee Lee & James vs Big Paul (19)2017-04-06 Team Yankee Lee & James vs Big Paul (20)2017-04-06 Team Yankee Lee & James vs Big Paul (21)2017-04-06 Team Yankee Lee & James vs Big Paul (22)2017-04-06 Team Yankee Lee & James vs Big Paul (23)2017-04-06 Team Yankee Lee & James vs Big Paul (24)

The damage in centre board was substantial; the T72s were able to destroy an Abrams and bail a second, as well as killing a VADS and a Rapier.  BMPs sat on a multi storey car park were also able to kill a second Rapier, and some snipe shots through the refinery took out a loaded M113 and with it a base of Riflemen.

The HINDS laughed off my 4 50 Cal shots and killed an M113.

This was going to be rough…

Turn 2 – NATO

I failed to remount my bailed Abrams so the remaining 2 moved to flank the T72s.¬† My infantry on the right were able to unpin AND blitz out of their transports to put sights on the flanks of the T72s.¬† James’ infantry took a building opposite the objective on the right.¬† A Mech Inf team on the left also moved up into a stable yard to press the objective and secure better firing lines for their Dragon teams.

I dropped smoke across the centreline in the right to protect my Abrams from BMP2 fire into their exposed rear armour.

We opened up with everything on the T72s.

2017-04-06 Team Yankee Lee & James vs Big Paul (30)

My Abrams secured revenge in no uncertain terms; 4 shots, 4 hits, 4 kills.¬† They weren’t messing around.¬† Another 2 T72s fell to Dragon and Milan fire.¬† This left the HQ and a single T72 from the unit, but it passed it’s Morale check and stood firm.

My Dragn teams also took shots on the HINDs lingering on my left flank but were unable to score any kills, whilst James destroyed 2 BMP2s on the multi storey car park and bailed a 3rd.

2017-04-06 Team Yankee Lee & James vs Big Paul (31)2017-04-06 Team Yankee Lee & James vs Big Paul (32)

Turn 2 – WARPAC

Paul rolled a successful reserves test and deployed another T72 unit, with it coming on our right flank (ideally he wanted in on the left)

2017-04-06 Team Yankee Lee & James vs Big Paul (34)

With mostly positioning moves on our right, he moved in for the kill on the Abrams with his HINDs on our left, supported by Infantry to take out my VADS.  He also pushed in the middle to destroy my cowering M113s.  His two remaining original T72s pushed deep into our board side where, protected by a tree line from the Chieftains, had no threat we could muster against them.

Shooting; the VADS managed to come out unmangled from shooting and when the HINDs came to fire the VADS put down 3 of them without remorse.¬† To add insult to injury, the remaining HIND missed and then failed it’s morale check.

However, a lone RPG team landed a hit on my Abrams, and with a flick of the save dice I rolled…. 1!¬† He made the FP check so successfully bail my Abrams, prompting a morale¬†test.

2017-04-06 Team Yankee Lee & James vs Big Paul (36)2017-04-06 Team Yankee Lee & James vs Big Paul (37)

I took my morale test… a predictable failure, and the Abrams were out!¬† The only consolation was in the middle board his BMPs were only able to bail a single M113 ūüôā

2017-04-06 Team Yankee Lee & James vs Big Paul (38)

Turn 3 – NATO

Short turn; I pushed up on the objective on the left and started raining shots on the infantry company there, whilst James mobilised his Chieftains into more favourable firing positions.  My M113s on the rail tracks stood their ground, killing a BMP and bailing a 2nd.

2017-04-06 Team Yankee Lee & James vs Big Paul (40)2017-04-06 Team Yankee Lee & James vs Big Paul (41)

Turn 3 – WARPAC

Another unit of T72s came on from the right; Paul rained shots into James’ infantry platoon whilst gradually pushing units towards the left objective.

Whilst the Brit Infantry stood stoic and unscratched in the face of dozens of shots, my M113s in the centre board were blasted to hell.  The 2 marauding T72s deep in my half took out a VADS.

On the right the Chieftains moved up…

…Whilst on the left I prepared to assault the Infantry company that had been whittled down on the previous turns.

The RPG team was killed, and I consolidated into the building, pushing the Russians back onto the objective.

Paul received another reinforcements, his Shilkas.  But once again they came on our right.

The left was an attempted consolidation of forces, with an attempt (and success) to dig in.

2017-04-06 Team Yankee Lee & James vs Big Paul (58)

On the right, the Russians finally decided to push HARD to get the Brits out of the building.¬† They shot with everything they had and then assaulted, only to be forced back by Brit defensive fire…

Turn 5 – NATO

With T72s crossing the board to reinforce the left objective, I had to go for it.

We moved in for the assault, killing 2 teams.  The RPG teams countered and killed a team!  I then failed to re-counter and fell back.  We both took morale checks; Paul passed, I failed, and my Infantry fled the field.

2017-04-06 Team Yankee Lee & James vs Big Paul (65)2017-04-06 Team Yankee Lee & James vs Big Paul (66)

GAME OVER

It was getting quite late; with the failed objective grab, and T72s moving to reinforce, we could have dragged on for another 3 or 4 turns but NATO had lost it’s momentum and we decided to call it there with a Soviet win.

Closing thoughts

Top game.  What we did wrong (in my opinion) :

  • Me and James should have swapped sides.¬† My masses of infantry and mobile Abrams would have loved the dense building terrain, whilst his Cheiftains would have enjoyed the low cover and long lines of sight on the left.
  • We weren’t aggressive enough.¬†¬† I had 4 platoons of Infantry but only really ‘went for it’ with 1.
  • James still detests Chieftains.

Looking forward to the next big-board game!

Here’s some pics of the Battlefield at the end.¬† As always, comments welcome!

Team Yankee Tournament – Rumble on the Rhine!

So some of the Janco team decided it was time to earn our Team Yankee wooden spoons.  Myself, Baldie, James and Big Paul headed down to Rumble on the Rhine in Preston.  The event was hosted by the Ribble Warriors running out of Frenchwood Social Club.

The room itself was a spot on size for the number of tables, and a bar was on tap to drown any sorrows.  A good start!

The Tables

The tournament tables were of a high standard with some nice variation.¬† One or two of them looked like they would be quite different to play on!¬† Hills featured quite prominently, which ironically we didn’t have a lot of experience playing on!¬† The rules for hills and hull down are quite difficult to implement from the Battlefront description, but the Ribble guys had come up with a nice solution where if you were sat in the back half of the hill you got the cover – nice and simple.

The Games

The tournament was 3 games, Nato vs WARPAC, with each table’s results contributing to the progress on the campaign map:

2017-02-19 Preston Tournament (25)

The interesting part was it was the TABLE’s result that game that contributed to each bar movement, not the same player’s each round.¬† I thought this was a nice touch.

I was using my Combined arms force that I’d been evolving over my last half dozen Janco games:

Game 1 – Mechanised Soviet List

My first game was against a BMP2 heavy mechanised list and I needed to take the objective from them.

Due to the placement of the terrain and setup area, the BMPs ended up having quite limited lines of sight and were rarely able to fire on My Abrams, who used their mobility to skip firing lines.  However, I was a little too hesitant with my infantry and in the end I was unable to dislodge them from the Objective.

The game ended 2:5 to the Russians.

Game 2 – T72 Soviet List

On this game I was attacking down the table against a T72 list.  My opponent chose to keep all his T72s in reserve initially and this allowed me to push up the board hard.  His BMP2 ambush failed utterly due what I can categorically say was the worst string of dice rolling I have ever seen Рit basically continued throughout the whole game.

I was eventually able to force his Infantry off the objective on my left and then use the Abram’s superior cross stat to occupy the woods around the objective and prevent a counter attack.

Score was 5:2 to the US; although I suspect a lot of this was down to the absolutely abysmal dice rolling of my opponent!  He was a great sport about it!

3rd Game – Soviet Afgantsy

I ended upon the defensive here, with my forces split across the board on 2 objectives and my Tanks in the middle ready to support either Objective.

My opponent pushed hard for one of the objectives by landing on my table edge behind it; however, I was able to move Infantry into range and force the Hinds back into the air where they were trimmed down to size with some lucky 50 CAL fire.

Once they were on the back foot, I was able to push the offensive with my tanks on the left flank whilst my right flank the Mech held solid.

6:1 win to the US (no pics for this one!)

Results

Overall the 4 HoG / Janco participants did pretty well – the amount of games and list tweaking we had done clearly paid off.

Closing Thoughts

The Ribble Warriors put on an EXCELLENT event.  We all had great fun.  The day was well thought out and prize support was pretty damned awesome as well with support from Tim Harris at The Plastic Soldier and a few of the Club Members with MDF products and the like (apologies if I missed anyone, please mention in the comments and I will add you!)

Will definitely be along for their future events!

Team Yankee on 8ft x 6ft Board – Lee vs Big Paul

Firstly, long time no post… I blame Real Life for getting in the way…

So a few of the lads have been discussing for some time that Team Yankee is bloody awesome, but one of the few things that we don’t like is the board can feel very ‘compact’ at¬†4ft x 3ft standard table size.¬† You tend to end up with a lot of car parks¬†hardly anything except infantry weaponry is ever out of range…

We’ve been proposing for some time to double the table size, and we finally got round to it.¬† Of course, we felt compelled to up the points to a very sizeable 150 (well Paul did!)

So on to the forces…..

Mission and Setup

We used the Expanded Missions Рchoose your strategy option (only way to play!).  I went planned attack and Paul went for hasty attack, generating a Mobile Battle with me as the Attacker.  A roll on the chart gave Hasty Attack.

Hasty Attack

Paul plonked his objective bang slap in the centre of a multi storey building in the middle of his table side, and an objective on a hill on my side not far off centre.

I went far left and far right with my objectives, hoping to split his forces over the much larger table width.

Haveing to choose my reserves first, I chose all my Abrams, 2 Mech teams and my VADS to start on table.  Paul chose 2 units of T-72s, his Gophers, and his 2 infantry companies (1 in BMP2s, the other in BMP1s).  The BMP2 company went into Ambush within their transports.

We both deployed, with Paul protecting the centre and left objective (it had by far the most cover leading to it, so was my obvious choice for attack).  I removed the right hand objective after deploying armour on the left flank and Mech to the centre with nice lines of sight and an eye on my own objective defence.

Turn 1 – Americans

I lucked out on my Reinforcements roll and after debating between the Cobras and M109s, I blitzed my Artillery onto the board using my HQ’s¬†Skill level¬†(he had been conveniently loitering on the edge of the board for such an occurrence!)

My armour on the road moved up to occupy a set of gardens, passing multiple cross checks, and my Armour HQ occupied a stables garden giving me lines of sight onto the T72s in the distance.  Everyone else hunkered down for some shooting.

My Abrams were able to destroy 1 T72 in the ensuing fire, along with a number of BMP1s.  The Dragons from my Mech teams also rained shots into the BMP1s, leaving them quite beleaguered once the smoke cleared.  The M109s, despite some ace shelling, killed a single base of infantry in the centre building.

Turn 1 – Russians

Paul dropped his BMP2 company out of ambush right in front of my Armour units.¬† Ah crap… His T72s swung round from behind the Ambush to get shots as well, and his T72s on my right flank pushed forward in line of sight.

Luckily for me, the T72 on the right flank were out of range.¬† Then, in some of the worst rolling I’ve ever seen, Paul only managed to hit my Abrams 2 or 3 times.¬† And I saved them all…¬† Worrying times for the Russians!

2017-03-30 Team Yankee Lee vs Paul 150pts (12)

Turn 2 – Americans

No reinforcements this turn, and with all my forces in good spots I moved straight to firing.

My centre Abrams started first, killing 3 T72s and bailing a 4th.

My Abrams on the left, alo with the HQ, tore into the BMP2s.  the Dragons from the 2 Mech Platoons followed suit; in the end, 5 BMPs were totalled and 1 bailed.

Turn 2 – Russians

The remaining T72s now centre table made for cover, and the ones on my right got into range.  His centre infantry company started to make their way across the Refinery towards my Objective.

Between the T72s and the BMP2s a hail of fire was poured into my Abrams yet again.¬† Yet only 1 Abrams fell to the firepower… I couldn’t believe my luck.

Turn 3 – Americans

I rolled for Reinforcements and got 1; I mobilised my Cobras, blitzing them on using my HQ.

Concentrating on the T72s, the US really turned up the HEAT (pun intended)….

With combined fire from my Abrams and Cobras, the T72s on the left were broken, and 2 T72s on the right destroyed.¬† The Russian General’s response was very appropriate…

2017-03-30 Team Yankee Lee vs Paul 150pts (24)

Turn 3 – Russians

Paul was unable to call any reinforcements just yet.  Resisting hitting the Vodka, he soldiered on.

His infantry moved up on both flanks and his remaining T72s broke off to the right behind the Refinery to flank my objective. ¬†His remaining BMPs took further shots on my Abrams.¬† With 2 hits landed, I saved them both….

2017-03-30 Team Yankee Lee vs Paul 150pts (28)

Turn 4 – Americans

I scored 2 lots of reinforcements so brought on both my Mech Platoons that were my 3rd Formation.  On the left, a platoon sped up the edge of the board protected by buildings from incoming fire.  4 Abrams moved to assist them.  My other platoon split from their transports; they landed mid-board, and the transports sped up the right flank to threaten the Gophers hanging around at the back.

In the centre and left I opened fire again, finishing off the remaining BMP2s.

2017-03-30 Team Yankee Lee vs Paul 150pts (31)

Turn 4 – Russians

Paul rolled 2 reinforcements on 2 dice.¬† He chose his HINDs and last T72 company; rolling for his T72s’ they came in on my left flank corner, immediately giving them flanking shots on a unit of Abrams!¬† 2 Abrams were destroyed due to below average to-hit rolling; I had gotten off relatively lightly.

2017-03-30 Team Yankee Lee vs Paul 150pts (36)

On my right, the HINDs dropped right next to the objective supported by 2/3 of an infantry company and 4 T72s.

AA fire from my M113s proved ineffective.  The HINDs, infantry and T72s between them killed 2 units of Mech Infantry and 4 M113s, again due to very poor dice rolling from Paul.  Nonethless, my objective was now threatened.

Turn 5 – Americans

My 3 Abrams in the centre finally broke cover and headed right, taking out 2 T72s on the right flank with snipe shots.

On the left, a combined crescendo of fire from 4 Abrams, 3 blitzed Dragons from my Mech platoon and the Cobras decimated the newly mobilised T72 company.

My Mortars came on to support my Objective; Dragons and M113s all opened up on the HINDs but were only able to down 1.

Turn 5 – Russians

On the left, the Russian Infantry were unable to cause any damage and were now in danger of being overwhelmed with ease.  On the right, a few M113s and Mortar tanks were lost but my objective had 3 Mech Platoons in range of it and 3 Abrams moving to support.

At this point Paul called the game.

Conclusion

The game itself was great – although the dice rolling was shockingly one sided.

Using the larger table added a lot of depth to the game, in terms of strategy, usefulness of units and just a much better look to the table (‘car parks’ seemed much less prevalent, Artillery ranges were useful for keeping them out of threat range etc).
