Mission and Setup

I thought I would try defence for a change; Lee decided the same so we ended up with a meeting engagement.  Rolling on the chart, we ended up with Free-For-All.  Carnage was assured…

As the Attacker I chose to roll on the night chart and we got a Dawn start.  All good…

2017-04-14 Team Yankee Lee vs Lee (1)

I set up strong to roll for the objective on my left… Big Lee mirrored and set up to hit hard on the objective on his left, but with a strong BMP2 overwatch force in mid table.

2017-04-14 Team Yankee Lee vs Lee (3)
A lone company of Infantry protects the objective on my left…
2017-04-14 Team Yankee Lee vs Lee (5)
T72s in full hiding, smell the fear…

He also chose to fully hide his T72 company in a wood!  Fear of my Abrams amongst the Janco WARPAC players seems to be in full force…

Turn 1 – WARPAC

Big Lee rolled the first turn.  He immediately moved to dig in both his infantry formations, and succeeded on both 5+ rolls…

2017-04-14 Team Yankee Lee vs Lee (9)
T72s begin a haphazard advance, heavily hampered by the woods
2017-04-14 Team Yankee Lee vs Lee (11)
In the middle, BMP2s reposition for cover from the Abrams and Dragon teams

With no shots of consequence fired, it was on to my turn…

Turn 1 – NATO

On my left I advanced my 2 platoons of Abrams; on the right I manoeuvred M113s for some shots on BMP2s.

Firing killed a stand of infantry on my left whilst the M113s and Dragons killed a BMP and bailed 3 or 4 more…

2017-04-14 Team Yankee Lee vs Lee (12)
First kill of the game, Big lee went a bit mental on the explosions…
2017-04-14 Team Yankee Lee vs Lee (13)
Dragons and 50 Cals lay down the pain
2017-04-14 Team Yankee Lee vs Lee (14)
More kills would have been nice…

Turn 2 – WARPAC

Lee continues to push on my right flank, whilst seeking to bolster the left with long range cover.

2017-04-14 Team Yankee Lee vs Lee (16)
Centre table, the BMPs reposition again ready for the Abram advance.
2017-04-14 Team Yankee Lee vs Lee (17)
All but 1 of the BMPs successfully remount and press the attack…
2017-04-14 Team Yankee Lee vs Lee (18)
…but are unable to inflict any kills, with the night proving to be a large factor.  The T72s continue to manoeuvre for position as more of their number emerge from the woods.

Turn 2 – NATO

I pushed my advance on the left and did what I could to slow the Russian advance on my right.  This was basically turning into a race to see who could lock down the objective first.

2017-04-14 Team Yankee Lee vs Lee (19)
Red Platoon dismount and Abrams move up to engage the Russian infantry
2017-04-14 Team Yankee Lee vs Lee (20)
VADS move to ambush the advancing Recon BMPs
2017-04-14 Team Yankee Lee vs Lee (21)
White Platoon move into the buildings and prep to fire
2017-04-14 Team Yankee Lee vs Lee (23)
2 BMPs destroyed and 2 bailed…

2017-04-14 Team Yankee Lee vs Lee (24)

2017-04-14 Team Yankee Lee vs Lee (25)
I realise in horror that I’ve forgotten to fire smoke and my Abrams are now exposed to 8 x AT21 shots from the centre board…  Regardless, we fire on the infantry again, securing minimal kills but pinning the unit again.

Turn 3 – WARPAC

Lee manoeuvres his T72s on the left to assault positions and gleefully fires his mid-table BMPs on my Abrams.

I get off relatively lightly as he’s needing 6s to hit; 1 Abrams bailed, another destroyed, both from separate platoons (no picture!)

On my right though, things turn nasty really quickly….

2017-04-14 Team Yankee Lee vs Lee (26)
Those 2 T72s sat on my objective due to a highly successful Soviet assault round.  Mistakes were made.
2017-04-14 Team Yankee Lee vs Lee (28)
Lee started by assaulting 2 bases in the building on his left.  He killed 1 base.  I tried to counter and succeeded, hoping he would fail his counter.  He didn’t, and ended up killing 2 more bases….
2017-04-14 Team Yankee Lee vs Lee (27)
…and getting right on top of the objective!

Turn 3 – NATO

Dawn broke and my night time advantage was gone.  I was on the verge of losing an objective and had very little in place to counter the T72 advance there.  Time for Black Platoon to save the day….

2017-04-14 Team Yankee Lee vs Lee (30)
My Abrams and Red Platoon set up for assault….
2017-04-14 Team Yankee Lee vs Lee (31)
In possibly the most important roll of the game, Black Platoon succeed in their Blitz roll and move 4 stands of Dragons into the flanks of the 2 marauding T72s.
2017-04-14 Team Yankee Lee vs Lee (32)
Firing results in a Shilka killed and 1 bailed, but no infantry kills.  Once again I have forgotten to drop smoke, and this time it could REALLY hurt….
2017-04-14 Team Yankee Lee vs Lee (33)
Black Platoon save the objective on my right.  They successfully kill 1 T72 and bail the other, allowing White Platoon to move in and spike the stranded T72.  My M113s do what they can to roadblock the advance of the rest of the T72 pack.
2017-04-14 Team Yankee Lee vs Lee (34)
The Abram’s assault goes pretty well, with several bases destroyed and follow up moves allowing some cover from the BMP2s.  I also kill 3 BMPs with Dragon fire from the 3 storey building.
2017-04-14 Team Yankee Lee vs Lee (35)
Red Platoon’s assault fails due to the failure of my Abrams to kill the LKPMG base…
2017-04-14 Team Yankee Lee vs Lee (36)
At the end of turn 3 the tides have turned.  My objective now has a protective screen that will buy it a turn or 2, whereas Lee’s could be overwhelmed quite easily next turn.  But some accurate BMP fire could also break my assault…

Turn 4 – WARPAC

Lee now finds himself on the back foot, scrambling to support his objective whilst re-planning his attack on mine.

2017-04-14 Team Yankee Lee vs Lee (38)
T72s circumnavigate the building, choosing to ignore my Roadblock.
2017-04-14 Team Yankee Lee vs Lee (39)
BMPs rush to reinforce Lee’s beleaguered objective

2017-04-14 Team Yankee Lee vs Lee (40)

2017-04-14 Team Yankee Lee vs Lee (41)
T72s slam into Black Platoon and one of my Formation HQs; luckily he gets off lightly….
2017-04-14 Team Yankee Lee vs Lee (42)
…This time I choose to fall back; so does Lee to protect his flanks from Dragon fire.
2017-04-14 Team Yankee Lee vs Lee (43)
BMP fire destroys my bailed T72 in a round of poor shooting for them
2017-04-14 Team Yankee Lee vs Lee (44)
1 lost from each Platoon now…

Turn 4 – NATO

On my right I create more Roadblocks.  Centre table, my VADS round the woods and take out several BMPs.

2017-04-14 Team Yankee Lee vs Lee (47)
I FINALLY REMEMBERED TO DROP SMOKE!!
2017-04-14 Team Yankee Lee vs Lee (46)
I consolidate my hold on the objective, killing the remaining Shilkas and pushing the remnants of the Soviet Infantry into the board corner.  Out of their Foxholes, they should now be an easy kill.

Turn 5 – WARPAC

Lee tries to push on my objective and defend his…

2017-04-14 Team Yankee Lee vs Lee (53)
T72s mince my VADS unit, with the final bailed tank fleeing
2017-04-14 Team Yankee Lee vs Lee (54)
I end up with a single bailed Abrams from the shooting.  Red Squadron, however, breaks and flees in their Transports.

Turn 5 – NATO

With the BMP threat all but neutered, and the T72 company unable to make gains on my objective, I move to secure the game.

2017-04-14 Team Yankee Lee vs Lee (56)
50 Cal fire from the M113s and Abrams finishes off the Russian Infantry…
2017-04-14 Team Yankee Lee vs Lee (57)
…Whilst the second Abrams Platoon and Dragons put paid to more BMPs
2017-04-14 Team Yankee Lee vs Lee (58)
Objective mine unless Lee can kill / bail / break 4 Abrams in one turn!

Turn 6 – WARPAC

2017-04-14 Team Yankee Lee vs Lee (62)
Combined firing is only able to destroy 1 Abrams.  It’s all over…

Turn 6 – NATO

With no-one contesting, the Abrams Platoons successfully secure the objective.

Victory : NATO!

Conclusions

The game essentially turned into a race when I decided not to redirect one of my Abrams platoons onto defence in turn 2.  Although it worked out, it very nearly didn’t…

When the 2 T72s broke through onto my objective, Lee dropped one mistake that probably cost him the win.  He didn’t spin his T72s to face Black Platoon.  The mistake was compounded when I succeeded in my Blitz move, which sealed the fate of the 2 T72s.  Had they been front facing, the likelihood was that I would not have been to remove them and they would have run rampant through my infantry there.

I was also lucky with Lee’s BMP rolling against my Abrams, although the night played a factor too.

Overall it was a great game.  Looking forward to the next one.

1 apiece Big Lee!

  1. Really good game, BMP units need to get to the range but dawn was a killer.

Stupid not to turn the T72’s but that’s why we play

Cracking force Lee has and he pushed hard with it, surprise for me was how long the Soviet PBI held out, those yanks are gonna be cleaning limbs from the Abrams tracks for weeks.

    1. Worked hard on the force, it’s got its weaknesses but can really turn a shift 🙂
